IGT Maremma Toscana Saffredi was first created in 1987 but the vineyard, in the area around Magliano, was planted seven years earlier by Elisabetta’s mentor, Fredi, to whom this Cru is dedicated. Saffredi was ready for the market in 1990 and within a very few years became the success that it still remains as one of the most important red wines within the panorama of the Italian wine world.

Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante Vineyard area: 4 hectares Altitude: 250 metres above sea level Position of vineyards: west and north/west facing for the Merlot Type of soil: the soil is moderately chalky with few organic substances and little clay Planting system: cordon spur Planting density: 4,000 plants/hectare Date of plantation: 1980 Yield grapes/hectare: 5/6 t Harvest period: half September for the Merlot, followed by Alicante and ending with the Cabernet Sauvignon well into October In the winery: fermentation takes place in temperature controlled (max. 320 C) stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation follows the alcoholic. The wine subsequently rests for 18 months in 75% new and 25% second usage barriques. It is bottled after a light clarifying 24 months after the harvest and is put on the market 3 autumns later
