19 Crimes for transportation to Australia
19 Crimes - punishable by transportation - if you were guilty of one of these crimes in the British Empire in the 19th century, you faced a punishment that was hardly inferior to death - banishment to Australia, the newly discovered continent - and that meant months of shipping. Many of the outlaws lost their lives on the crossing - some survived. These crimes included various theft offences, arson, punishment for repeat offenders, and some other laws, some of them strange, such as pretending to be Egyptians.
A new world and a new life awaited the survivors, pioneers in a frontier penal colony. The 19 Crimes Wines tells of the inmates who broke rules and the culture they built. They included common thieves, but also freedom fighters for what was then still part of Britain, Ireland.
Living labels and 19 corks
The people on the labels are not from imagination, but were flesh and blood. The wines of 19 Crimes are a tribute to them, and by means of an app, the historical stories can be listened to via the label. But also the corks speak for themselves. On them, one of the 19 crimes is printed, which led to receive the punishment by "transport".
The 19 Crimes wines come from southeastern Australia. The most important wine growing regions of the country are located here, along the fertile coasts.
The wines of 19 Crimes are mainly produced from red varieties:
- Shiraz
- Pinot Noir
- Cabernet Sauvignon
But there is also a Chardonnay in the portfolio.
The label's latest achievement is a cooperation with the rapper Snoop Dogg, with whom a series of Californian wines was launched under the name 19 Crimes. As a result, a cuvée of Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, as well as a rosé made from Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Grenache, can now be found on the shelves.
Follow our convicts into the new world, and be careful not to be guilty ;)
