Aragon

(158)

Aragon has a proud winemaking tradition dating back to the 2nd century B.C., which experienced its first splendid flowering in the monasteries of the Middle Ages. After having temporarily lost its importance, the wine region has been making a successful comeback for several decades now.

Aragon: Home of the Garnacha Tinta

Aragon is mainly known for red wines, with Garnacha Tinta being by far the most important variety. Typical is the blending of autochthonous and international varieties, but of course you can also find pure red and white wines from Aragon here at VINELLO.

 Important vine varieties in Aragon

The red grape variety that characterises the style of Aragon is the autochthonous Garnacha or Grenache. The Spanish variety Tempranillo from neighbouring La Rioja is also cultivated, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carignan. The most important white varieties of the wine growing region are Garnacha Blanca, Chardonnay and the Spanish Macabeo. In addition, there are vineyards with Gewürztraminer and Moscatel.

The four DO areas in Aragon

In Aragon, wine is grown in a total of eleven wine-growing regions. Four of these have the DO (Denominación de Origen) or DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida) registered designation of origin. These areas are:

  • Calatayud

  • Campo de Borja

  • Cariñena

  • Somontano.

Calatayud

Calatayud in southwest Aragon is one of the hottest and driest areas of the wine region. The 6,000 hectares of vineyards are mainly located on marl, limestone and slate soils on both sides of the Ebro and on tributaries such as the Jalon and the Manubles. Cultivation takes place at altitudes between 500 and 900 metres. A strong temperature gradient during the day slows down the wine's ageing process, which has a positive effect on its quality.

The area produces red wines of strong character and richness, fruity fresh white wines and powerful rosé wines. A dry red cuvée from Calatayud, typical of Aragon, can be enjoyed with the expressive Monte Armantes Garnacha Tempranillo from the Bodegas San Gregorio, for example.

Campo de Borja

Campo de Borja is named after the famous noble Borjas family, who brought viticulture to flourish in this part of Aragon. The area is the transition zone between the Ebro Valley and the Iberian Mountains further west. In the hilly areas between 350 and 700 metres above sea level, wine is grown on an area of 7,400 hectares. Here clay and limestone soils predominate. Garnacha's share of red varieties is 75%, which is even higher than in the rest of Aragon. The proportion of white varieties is only 10%.

High-quality red wines from the Campo de Borja can be ordered, for example, with the varietal Garnacha wines from Cuevas de Arom. These include the complex Os Cantals DO or the equally profoundly complex As Ladieras DO. A very intense and fruity Garnacha, which thrives on vines up to one hundred years old, is the Veraton Garnacha Campo de Borja from the Alto Moncayo winery. If you want to buy a vegan red wine, you will find exactly what you are looking for with the Crucillón DO of Bodegas Aragonesas.

Cariñena

Cariñena is one of Spain's oldest wine-growing regions and was the first to be granted the then new status of DO region in 1960. With around 17,00 hectares, Cariñena has more cultivated area than any other area in Aragon. The vineyards are mainly located in the Ebro Valley. In the south the land rises. Here, cultivation is possible at altitudes of up to 800 metres. The barren soil in Cariñena is complemented by alluvial deposits of the Ebro.

Very popular here at VINELLO are the red wines of the Care Family Vineyards, which are also very suitable for beginners in the world of wine. These include, for example, the red Tinto Sobre Lias based on Garnacha and Syrah, the varietal red Garnacha Nativa and the Crianza - a cuvée of Merlot and Tempranillo. A delicious semi-dry summer wine from Cariñena is obtained with the fruity Agostón Chardonnay Viura DO from the Virgen del Aguila winery.

Somontano

Somontano, with around 4,300 hectares of vineyards, is the smallest and at the same time the northernmost of the four DO regions in Aragon. The name literally means "at the foot of the mountain" and already refers to its location on the southern foothills of the Pyrenees. The soil is highly calcareous, well drained and favours deep root growth of the vines. The average temperature is lower than in the rest of Aragon.

One of the ambitious and successful wineries in Somontano is Bodega Enate, which produces real top quality wines. For special occasions, the José Manuel Broto Reserva Especial DO made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or the Rafael Canogar Reserva Especial DO are ideal. The Chardonnay Barrique DO from Enate, for example, is recommended as a full-bodied white wine with an intense aroma.

Location of Aragon in Spain

The Aragon wine region is located in the north-east of Spain. In the north it borders on France. In the east it is separated from the Mediterranean by Catalonia and the Valencian Country. In the southwest it is joined by Castile-La Mancha and in the west by Castile and Leon. To the northwest are La Rioja and Navarre. The two dominant geographical features in Aragon are the Pyrenees to the north and the valleys of the river Ebro and its tributaries.

Wine-growing region Aragon

Aragon is a Spanish wine-growing region which enjoys an international reputation for its four DO areas Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariñena and Somontano. Here, one million hectolitres of red wines, high-quality rosés and lively white wines for unclouded summer enjoyment are produced on around 34,000 hectares of vineyards. In addition to the winegrowers' cooperatives and large estates or bodegas, there are now also a number of smaller independent wineries in Aragon.
