Azienda Santa Cristina in the historic valley of Val di Chiana
The winery Santa Cristina was founded in 1946 by the Marchesi Antinori and is still today a point of reference for wine-growing in the region. From the wine cellar you can enjoy a magnificent view of the historic town of Cortona, not far from Siena and Perugia, in the fertile valley of the Val di Chiana in southern Tuscany.
Here the Etruscans already produced wine in ancient times, Pliny the Elder praises a white wine from Cortona, the delightful Renaissance pope Paul III bought plenty of wines from these vineyards and many an Italian poet found his inspiration in the "wonderful wines" from Cortona.
Azienda Santa Cristina - Terroir and Quality
The first vintage Santa Cristina was produced in 1946. The soils consist mainly of sandstone, marl and slate, deposits of gravel and clay, little calcareous, balanced in proportion and composition of clay, loam and sand of different grain sizes. Santa Cristina has always identified itself with the terroir and the typical grape varieties of this region.
Respect and care in the care of the vineyards and in the work in the cellar, constant confrontation with indigenous and international grape varieties, a spirit of innovation, knowledge of the close connection between vineyard, terroir and people, have always been the basis of the simple philosophy of the Santa Cristina winery and guarantee of intact quality.
The new Santa Cristina wine cellar
With the new wine cellar Santa Cristina takes a further step in a long wine-making tradition. In 2006, after two years of construction, the new wine cellar was inaugurated and named after the historic "Santa Cristina", which was first vinified in 1946. It represents the production philosophy of the winery, advanced technology combined with the constant search for quality in line with ancient tradition and love for the land.
A visit to the wine cellar allows you to experience all the phases of winemaking, from the moment the grapes arrive from the vineyard, to the barrique cellar where the wines mature, to bottling and dispatch.
Santa Cristina and Apicius - Wine and Pleasure
The International School for Hospitality Apicius has been cooperating successfully with Santa Cristina for quite some time and trains foreign students from tourism and hospitality. Apicius cultivates Cookbook recipes and food pairing with the wines of Santa Cristina: inspiration for enjoyment and dining throughout the year!
