The Livon family has been growing wine in Friuli for 50 years. In the very north-east of Italy, at the gateway to Eastern Europe, lies the love and tradition of the Livons, who with their 4 estates have risen to become one of the best-known winegrowers in Friuli.
Aziende Agricole Livon - wine culture from Friuli
In the far north-east of Friuli lies the Collio region, directly on the border with Slovenia. Dorino Livon bought his first vineyards here in 1964 and thus established the Azienda Agricola Livon. He was soon followed by his sons Valneo and Tonino, with whom the decision was made to expand the estate's product line.
This led to the Cru wines, which come from selected plots and are the higher quality wines of the estate, and the Classici, which are produced in larger quantities for the mass market. In the 90s and around the turn of the millennium, the family eventually acquired four more estates in order to remain competitive in the rapidly changing wine market:
- Villa Chiòpris (Friuli)
- Tenuta Roncalto (Friuli)
- Borgo Salcentino (Tuscany)
- Fattoria Colsanto (Umbria)
Today, with Matteo and Francesca, the next generation of the family is already waiting in the wings to carry on the legacy.
Terroir of the Livon estates
Four estates are now part of the Livon group, with Tenuta Roncalto included in the parent estate.
Livon on the Collio hills
The Livon estate in Collio is located in a region that was flooded in early times, so that the soils here are made up of flysch, a layered rock formation. The roots of the vines dig into marl and sandstone, ideal conditions for producing top-quality white wines, but some red representatives also gain excellent notes from the terroir.
Villa Chiòpris at the foot of Collio
At Villa Chiòpris, at the foot of the Collio hills, the soil changes to gravel and sand, which lies on a dolomite massif. The gravel acts as a natural temperature regulator, taking the stress off the vines and allowing for particularly aromatic grapes. Both red and white wines are produced here by Livon.
Borgo Salcentino in Tuscany
Borgo Salcentino is located in the middle of the famous Chianti region. The hills of limestone slate, as well as the strong temperature fluctuations between day and night, give the eponymous wines made from the Sangiovese grape their unmistakable aroma, which has made them famous all over the world.
Umbrian wines from the Fattoria Colsanto
The Fattoria Colsanto is located in Montefalco, where the regional wines Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso are produced. Even though this region has only recently appeared in the wine world, the Etruscans already cultivated wine here. The alkaline clay soils provide a characteristic acidity of the wines from this region.
