Bardolino – A Tangy Pleasure

Even the first Habsburgers loved to fill their glasses with this dry wine. Bardolino wine is loved for the ruby red colour of its fruity grape juice. Bardolino wine is made from the Corvina, Veronese and Rondinella grape varieties and develops a bouquet with notes of cherry, sour cherry, strawberry, raspberry and black currant. Its bouquet is rounded off with a long, tangy finish. When drunk young, a dry Bardolino is a lively pleasure that can be enjoyed every season of the year.

The Origin of Bardolino Wine

The lightness of Bardolino wine reflects its origins. Chalky, rocky, morainic soil lends this red wine minerality. The varied Lake Garda climate, with its fresh winds and warm sunshine, provides the perfect conditions for the ripening process of the grapes. Along with the community it is named after, Italian Bardolino wine is also grown in the region between the towns of Affi, Cavaion, Costermano, Garda and Lazise. There are over 40 wineries along the Lake Garda Wine Route – the Strada del Vino – which devote themselves to the production of Bardolino. The love for wine they have in common culminates in an annual festival, the Festa dell’Uva e del Vino, which takes place every year from the end of September to the beginning of October and attracts over 100 000 visitors to the idyllic Bardolino region. Amidst the colourful festivities on the promenades of Punta Mirabello and Punta Cornicello, one can drink, eat and celebrate to one's heart's content, and of course 'talk shop'. The star of the Festa dell’Uva e del Vino; is, of course, none other than Bardolino wine.

Bardolino Wine: Quality and Recommendations

This northern Italian wine is produced in the quality categories DOC and DOCG. The Bardolino DOC wine – grown, vinified and bottled in the central region between Bardolino, Lazise, Affi, Garda, Costermano and Cavaion – may also bear the designation Bardolino classic. It must have an alcohol content of at least 10.5 %/vol. The 'power' variation of the quaffable Bardolino classic is the Bardolino superior with its DOCG seal. This type of wine must be matured for a minimum of one year and has to have an alcohol content of at least 12.5 %/ vol.

Especially interesting Bardolino vintages were the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. Aside from their low-yield harvests, the quality of these Bardolino wines, especially the 2014 wines, received very high ratings. According to the wine guide 'Gambero Rosso', the best Bardolino wine of 2014 came from the Le Vigne di San Pietro winery in Sommacampagna, on the southeast edge of the DOC and was awarded a rating of 'three glasses'. A good Bardolino red wine, however, has no need for an award: The finesse of this fine wine simply speaks for itself.

Bardolino Red Wine: Drinking Recommendation, Storage and Shelf Life

The renowned Bardolino red wine should be decanted for a short time and chilled to a drinking temperature of between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius. It pairs wonderfully with light meat dishes, pizza, pasta or in-between snacks. In a dry, dark and well-ventilated place, it can be stored for up to four years. In order to ensure the optimal flavour of a Bardolino wine, we recommend drinking it within the first two years after it has been bottled.
