The family winery Bergsig Estate is located in the wonderful panorama of the Worcester Mountains in the Breedekloof Wine Valley. The name comes from this enchanting landscape - Bergsig = mountain view.
Bergsig Estate - a dream at the foot of the mountains
In 1843, Willem Hendrik Lategan settled here, at the foot of the Drakenstein and Hex River Mountains, to start a new life. The Lategan family stayed and has now been farming the Bergsig Estatefor almost 180 years.
Geological conditions
Two streams from the mountains converge at Bergsig Estate, providing the estate with a continuous year-round supply of meltwater. The Breede River Valley narrows where the Bergsig Estate is located. The narrowing creates fast, cool winds which provide cooling in the South African heat.
This makes this one of the coldest spots in the valley, which means the grapes tend to ripen slowly and the harvest is delayed by 2-3 weeks. The Breede River Valley is characterised by very different soil types. On the hills, for example, there is sandstone, while in the valley there is limestone in the soil.
The Lategans are actively involved in the protection of the native flora. Thus, foreign species that harm the biotope are actively removed and an intact flora is preserved.
The grapes and the wine at Bergsig Estate
A wide range of grape varieties are grown at Bergsig Estate. A small excerpt of them:
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Chardonnay
- Shiraz
- Pinotage
Three different lines of wine are offered by Bergsig Estate today: Bergsig, Icarus and Lategan Reserve Wines. Whereas under the proper name you can find the single-varietal wines of the Lategans, Cuveés are produced under the name of the Greek mythological figure. The Reserve Wines, on the other hand, reveal as early as in their name that they are wines that have been ripened for a long time.
