Sheep, meadows and cold climate - Marlborough

Until the 70s Marlborough was just another sleepy country, populated by large herds of sheep. The climate was cold - but not too cold to vinify a first Sauvignon Blancs from Marlborough. And Brancott Estate accepted this challenge. To this day, this New Zealand winery can convince with its wines, above all with the grape varieties

The first vines

The first vines were planted in 1973. But the success failed to materialize - but the ambition of the Brancott winegrowers increased. And so they thought in a new direction, even literally. The vines were replanted and now enjoy sunny days and cold nights at their new location.

When Montana Wines became Brancott Estate

It all started with the name Montana Wines. But as international awareness grew, the risk of changing the US market and wines from the state of Montana was too great. A new name had to be found for the winery - and so the name was chosen after the Brancott winery in Blenheim.

However, the name Montana Wines can still be found on New Zealand shelves today. The brand awareness in New Zealand is simply too great and so labels with the name Montana Wines are still printed for the national market today. So if you're going on holiday in New Zealand and you see Montana Wines - it's the Brancott Estate as we know it.
