The cross between the Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta) and Cot was carried out on behalf of INRAE at Domaine de Vassal and has proven to be an extremely resistant and high-yielding variety. DNA analyses carried out in 2013 have confirmed this parentage.

One of the most important characteristics of the Caladoc grape is its resistance to trickling and botrytis, as well as its low susceptibility to powdery mildew. These diseases can cause significant damage to other grape varieties, resulting in lower yields and poorer qualities. The Caladoc grape is also resistant to extreme temperatures and can be grown in hot, dry climates.

The Caladoc grape is medium to late ripening and has a high sugar content, resulting in powerful red wines that are high in tannin and alcohol. However, it is also suitable for the production of rosé wines. These wines are often fresh and fruity with a slight acidity and a beautiful pink color. The Caladoc grape adds a nice structure and complexity to the wines.

In the south of France, the Caladoc grape is widely planted and occupies a total of 3,062 hectares. In Portugal, it is mainly grown in the Lisboa region on 2,180 hectares. There are also smaller populations in Argentina (15 ha), Brazil (0.3 ha), Spain, Lebanon, Morocco and Switzerland (0.2 ha). In 2016, a total of 5,258 hectares of vines were reported worldwide, with an increasing trend. The variety is thus ranked 111th in the world grape variety ranking (Kym Anderson statistics).

The Caladoc grape is an interesting new variety that is grown in various wine regions around the world due to its hardiness and potential. It has proven to be an excellent choice for the production of red and rosé wines, which can be fresh and fruity as well as rich in tannins and alcohol. The variety has become an important grape in the wine world in a short time and will certainly continue to play an important role in the future.
