Campania

Campania wine comes from the Italian region of Campania, which is located in the south-west of the peninsula and stretches around Naples in a crescent shape. Campania is well known and famous for its spectacular coastline and the many ruins dating back to Roman times, including the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were buried by a heavy eruption of Vesuvius around 79 AD.

Campania wine and its history

The first winegrowers in one of the oldest wine regions of Italy were the Etruscans, followed by the Greeks, who established colonies here around 1000 BC. Later came the Romans, who perfected viticulture and pressed in Campania the supposedly best wines of ancient times, including the famous Falerno, Faustiniano and Greco varieties. They were called "Wines of the Emperors", and even today, in the frescoes preserved in the villas of Pompeii and Herculaneum, you can see the cult that was practised around wine.

Campania short & sweet

Campania wine is one of the oldest plants in the diverse wine world of Italy. In ancient times, Campania was considered the best growing region, and it was here that the "wines of the emperors" were produced. Today many simple wines are produced there. However, connoisseurs now compare the top wines Agliano del Taburno and Taurasi - both DOCG wines - with the outstanding red wines of Tuscany and Piedmont.

Viticulture in Campania today

The area under vines is about 42,000 hectares, producing an average annual production of about 2.2 million hectolitres of wine. Red wines account for about 70% of the total production and white wines for 30%. The top red variety is the Aglianico, from which the vine growers produce full-bodied, dark and aromatic wines such as the Taurasi, one of the most famous great wines of Campania. The most appreciated white wines are those made from Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, where fine aromas of nuts and yellow fruits predominate.

Climate and soils in Campania

Wine from Campania is characterised by the Mediterranean, maritime climate, lots of warmth on the sun-drenched slopes and sheltering mountain ranges. The soils consist mainly - no wonder with the proximity of the Vesuvius - of volcanic rock and alluvial soil. At the higher altitudes, cold winters alternate with hot, dry summers, which makes them particularly suitable for red wines. Unfortunately, the potential is not fully exploited because the region is very poor and is still suffering from the destruction caused by earthquakes in the 1960s. However, new and higher quality standards are ensuring that Campania wine is gradually regaining its importance.

The most important grape varieties for Campania wine

Of particular interest is the fact that Campania wine is made mainly from autochthonous vines. Internationally known grape varieties, on the other hand, play only a minor role in the DOC regulations.

The most important red varieties:

- Aglianico (locally known by many names)

- Aglianicone

- Casavecchia

- Barbera

- Olivella

- Guarnaccia

- Per'e Palummo

- Sangiovese

- Primitivo

The main white varieties:

- Greco

- Biancolella

- Coda di Volpe Bianca

- Moscato Bianco

- Trebbiano Toscano

- Falanghina

- Caprettone

- Fiano

- Fenile

- Malvasia Bianca di Candia

- Verdeca

- Ripolo

- Forastera
