In 1962, a few Italian vintners in the San Marzano region joined together to found Cantine San Marzano. It is a vintner association with the purpose of reviving the winegrowing tradition in Apulia and the production of impressive wines that reflect their regional character. The cooperative has grown immensely over the last few decades. Today it boasts over 1200 members.
The vintners’ vineyards are located in the D.O.P. Primitivo di Manduria region, a strip of land between the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea, which often exhibits extreme climatic conditions: The indigenous vegetation has to stand up to periods of drought, frost and the desert winds that blow from the Sahara to the Mediterranean from south-southeast. But the vintners from the Cantine San Marzano cooperative care for the vineyards with such passion that even the oldest grapevines bear full fruit. Both modern technology and traditional oenological expertise are used to ensure that the ripe fruits are vinified into elegant wines. The result: first-class products such as the very popular Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria.
