The Val de Loire is one of the northernmost regions in France, along with Alsace and Champagne, where reliable wine growing is still possible. The geology and climate there are shaped by the Loire river and its numerous tributaries.
The Val de Loire wine region
Famous is the wine-growing region Val de Loire, which is the second largest in France after the Bordelaise, with about 70,000 hectares of vineyards. Above all, however, it is more diverse than any other French wine region and produces a wide variety of red and white wines, rosé and sparkling wines as well as liqueur wines (French vins liquoreux).
