Champagne Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer – the Tsar’s First Choice
The renowned enterprise Louis Roederer Champagne was founded in Reims in 1776 and has been family owned ever since. In 1833, Louis Roederer took over the family business from his uncle, Nicolas Schreider, and changed the name to his own. Thanks to the family’s commitment and good relations with commercial travellers, the sales at Louis Roederer Champagne encompassed ten percent of the entire Champagne production by 1872. At that time, the principle consumer, beside the United States of America, was the Russian Empire. Tsar Nicholas II, who had a great love for the Champagnes from Louis Roederer, ordered a special vintage from Reims and even sent his own court cellar master to assist the producers of the noble sparkling wine. The product that resulted from their cooperation is the world famous and still beloved Cristal Champagne.
Success is the Sum of Good Decisions
While many other Champagne producers purchase their grapes from contract vintners, Louis Roederer decided to follow a different strategy and actively acquired vineyards around Reims. Frédéric Rouzaud, Roederer’s current manager, has continued this tradition, and the family business now owns vineyards covering 214 hectares. Although Louis Roederer Champagne has a high production volume, it is still not enough to fulfil the incredible demand for their luxurious products.
