Château de Mercués
Grand Vins de Mercués - Château de Mercués
In 1983, Georges Vigouroux purchased this deserted 13th Century castle situated between the towns of Mercuès and Caillac, northwest from Cahors. Château de Mercués was built upon a hill above the River Lot and has experienced turbulent times. It is considered one of the most beautifully built castles in France and once served its inhabitants as a defence stronghold. In earlier times, the gardens and landscape surrounding the Château de Mercués were planted with grapevines, which is why new vineyards were cultivated in 1987. In the meanwhile, bold and full-bodied wines are made from the grapes that grow in the sandy, chalky and gravelly soil: Malbec, Merlot and Tannat wines that slowly mature to attain their best panache.
