Wine from Chile - on top
Wine has existed here since 1551, since the Spaniards discovered South America. But the full-bodied, powerful red wines and elegantly refreshing whites that gather prizes and awards worldwide are a product of modern times. But what could wine from Chile be other than excellent? Warm days, chilling nights, ideal soils for vines and unfavourable climate for phylloxera, refined with French influences and icy glacial water from the Andes - concentrated aroma, bottle by bottle, Chilean viticulture.
Netflix and Chil(enian wines)
The high altitudes, the cool sea breezes, the unique climatic conditions - all this shapes and drives the Chilean wine. Luxuriant wines from the noble grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Syrah and the secret Star Carmèrère experience optimal conditions in Chile to perfectly mature and to score with concentrated freshness.
Chilean wine taste
The isolated location also results in an incomparable character for Chilean top wines. Velvety the red wines, flowery the whites. Often very alcoholic, the wines from Chile are mostly dry and semi-dry. The calcareous clay soils provide the Chilean wine with minerality, while the strongly fluctuating temperature between day and night concentrates the aromas. The best conditions for grapes, al ot of which are used for the production of Pisco, Chile's national drink.
Growing regions for wine from Chile
The Coquimbo region in the hot north of Chile is known for its heavy red and white wines, which enjoy perfect conditions in the valleys between the Atacama Desert and the Pacific Ocean. Despite the low rainfall climate, the vines do not have to do without water. By irrigating the very fertile soil, the valleys are very productive cultivation areas for Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc, which display an undreamt-of freshness.
The Valle Central is home to a large number of renowned wine growing regions in Chile. Above all, the Valle del Maipo around the capital Santiago de Chile is responsible for the rise of Chilean viticulture. As the oldest wine-growing region for Chilean wine, the winegrowers shine with many years of experience in dealing with the mineral soils and create fruity and soft wines. The vineyards here reach up to 1000 metres above sea level and are lined with the most cultivated variety in Chile - Cabernet Sauvignon. The rest is made up mainly of red grape varieties such as Merlot, Carménère, Syrah and Malbec and a few white varieties such as Chardonnay, Semillón and Sauvignon blanc. Wines from Valle Central are characterized by a noble structure and fresh acidity and are often lavish in character - probably influenced by French winegrowers who explored new terroir in Chile in the middle of the 19th century.
The Aconcagua wine region is named after the highest mountain in the snow-capped Andes. Meltwater feeds the rivers that meander through the region. Favoured by two openings of the Cordillera de la Costa, the mountain range along the Chilean coast, the vineyards are relieved with cool sea air from the hot climate. This provides ideal conditions for winegrowing, which the winegrowers reward with the production of the best Chilean red wines. Since large investments of foreign wine greats, the Valle de Aconcagua also experienced a boom, which made the wines from Chile also known for wine experts.
The Chilean wine law
A quality system does not exist in Chile, only a regulation for designations of origin exists. Denominación de Origen, or D.O. for short, is used to precisely indicate the source of the wine and to guarantee that it has been pressed from one of the 23 approved varieties for quality wine. Therefore, at least 85% of the wine must be vinified from the indicated grape. The same applies to the vintage and the origin. This means that 25% of the wine may come from another vintage and 25% of the wine from another origin. The addition of sugar to increase the alcohol content is prohibited, although the addition of acid is permitted.
