The Collegium Wirtemberg is a winegrowers' association in the Stuttgart area. The Collegium is fully committed to the Württemberg winemaking tradition and continues it at an excellent level.
Collegium Wirtemberg - colleagues on the mountain
The origins of Collegium Wirtemberg lie in the Uhlbach and Rothenberg winegrowing cooperatives, which merged in 2007. The community's vineyards are located on the Württemberg in the Stuttgart city area, which is where the name comes from.
On the top of the Württemberg stands the Rothenberg burial chapel, where Württemberg's King Wilhelm I, as well as his wife and daughter, are buried. This very chapel is reflected in the logo of the community.
The historically valuable buildings of the two wine cooperatives in Uhlbach and Rothenberg are still preserved and serve as sales and tasting rooms today.
The vineyards on the Württemberg
Today, the Collegium Wirtemberg has about 150 hectares of vineyards, with a focus on red wine varieties. Typical for the Stuttgart region, the following varieties are mainly cultivated here:
Trollinger (40 ha)
Lemberger (17 ha)
Pinot noir (14 ha)
White wine is also produced, with the emphasis on Riesling. The soils are characterized by travertine and sandstone, which give the wines a very characteristic aroma. The vineyards range in altitude from 290 to 440 metres above sea level. Today, the Collegium Wirtemberg has over 200 members, 35 of whom are grape suppliers. The annual yield is about 13,000 hectoliters.
Today, the Collegium Wirtemberg winery is located at the Fleckensteinbruch in Untertürkheim, where steel tanks as well as a wooden barrel cellar are available.
