The sun shines for 17 hours in summer with lush temperatures up to 40° C, with winters taking on arctic characteristics. Rain, on the other hand, is almost non-existent. The largest wine producer in Washington State thrives on this steppe-like terroir. For it contains the strengths of the Single Vineyards wines, which are considered to be the expressive figurehead for the wine from Washington State.

Columbia Crest wines are usually at the top of the lists of wine magazines and experts. This in no way stops Columbia Crest Winery on its way to the highest quality wines. Thanks to excellent vineyards and craftsmanship, the best grape varieties are developed. Grape varieties of the premium winery

Since 1983 the still quite young winery from Paterson has been operating as part of the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, among which the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery produces top wines. However, Columbia Crest made the most of this short time and convinced the Wine Spectator, who awarded the Wine of the Year Producer title to the premium winery in 2009. The main reason for this is the irrefutable principle of creating wines that are balanced, rich in aromas and flavours and exceed expectations. The distinctive Single Vineyards and varietal strengths of the cultivated grape varieties are responsible for this:

The terroir of southern Washington

The southeast of Washington State is dominated by the Columbia River and the steppe area of the Horse Heaven Hills. The sun shines here over 17 hours a day and the temperatures are very warm. The low rainfall requires the vines to protect themselves in order not to perish. Therefore the vines produce fewer leaves but thick skinned berries. This provides distinctive tannins and aromas - a plus for the barren area. Drip irrigation ensures that the plants receive enough moisture. This ensures that an exact amount of water is always supplied at the right time. Consistent quality year after year is guaranteed, while the winemaker's craft provides the crowning touch.
