The history of the Coppo winery and family is closely intertwined with the history of the town of Canelli, which was already the capital of Moscato.

The Coppo winery in Canelli/Piedmont

The company was born under the sign of Moscato, when its founder Piero Coppo began to produce sweet sparkling wines at the beginning of the 20th century. The step from sweet sparkling wine to dry sparkling wine made from Pinot grapes was inevitable, as was the move to deal with the great red wines of Monferrato and the Langa.

Solid family cohesion at Coppo

Piero's successor was his son Luigi, who expanded the company and equipped it with structures and equipment that enabled it to face the markets in the difficult post-war period, and who left his own sons, Piero, Gianni, Paolo and Roberto, not only the vineyards but also the philosophy of life and business that underlies the production of today's wines. The enthusiasm of the four young men led them to take the direction that would prove successful in the eighties.

Coppos Pomorosso

They developed, among other crus, the Pomorosso: the Barbera in Barrique, symbol of Piedmontese pride. Formerly smoked, today it is finally recognised. The courage of the young people, with their feet firmly planted on tradition, led them to look into those grape varieties that were about to shape the taste of an international market, and so Chardonnay and Cabernet came to Canelli as a challenge. A new cellar, high investments, restorations and environmental protection measures characterise the work carried out in recent years.

One of the oldest family-owned wineries in Italy

Today, the Coppo Winery is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Italy and was even added to the State Register of Historic Companies in 2012. The Coppo family's wine-growing area extends over 52 hectares, the heart of which is in Monferrato, in southern Piedmont.
