Criadores de Rioja

Criadores de Rioja is a fairly young winery, founded in 1999. Even though the company has not been present on the market for long, it has already been able to position itself well. The Vivanco family, who have been dealing in Rioja wines for a long time, own the estate and so it is only natural that they can benefit from their expertise.

In the Iregua Valley, which is crossed by the river of the same name, the vines grow below the ruins of Castillo de Clavijo. Rioja itself is one of the most important wine growing areas in Europe.

The soil is mainly made up of:

• white lime
• clay

The most common grape varieties are Tempranillo and Garnacha.

The cultivation at Criadores de Rioja is carried out carefully, selective pruning and manual harvesting are a matter of course. Pesticides and fertilisers are not used and so nature is not polluted. Today the estate has about 350 hectares of vineyards, which benefit by the good location below the castle.

Every Criadores de Rioja wine speaks for itself

In the cellar Paola Redonda is the boss. Here, the cellar master supervises the production of the individual site wines with Argus eyes, which are vinified separately before blending into cuvées. In this way the individual character of the wines is preserved and many nuances of taste are possible, be it a fruity-berry wine or strong, balsamic notes. The cellar tradition of Rioja is very much inspired by Bordeaux, so the wine is typically aged in barriques.
