Deakin Estate is an Australian winery located on the Murery River.
From no man's land to oasis - Deakin Estate
In the 1880s, the region around the present town of Mildura in the Australian state of Victoria went from being a no man's land to an oasis for agriculture, where citrus fruits, olives, almonds and grapes were grown. Australia's former Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, who encouraged the Chaffey Brothers from California to cultivate the land, was to blame.
The winery and its name
The Deakin Estate, which is located in this very region, is named after this Prime Minister. At first the grapes ripened in the countryside were not used to make wine, but were sold as fruit. With the construction of a winery in 1980, however, the production of Australian wines with the special character typical of the country began.
The grape varieties
Today, the Deakin Estates vineyards cover 217 hectares, which stretch along the Murray River. The main grape varieties grown are
- Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Colombard
- Semillon
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Shiraz
- and Merlot.
The winemaker Fran Newman

The friendly Australian adopts the motto of his football club for his work with grapes: Nil satis nisi optimum - he is only really satisfied with the very best. His efforts are worthwhile, because Deakin Estate now sells its wines in 30 countries worldwide.
