It was a certain Ètienne Guigal who in 1946 founded the Château d'Ampuis winery in the municipality of Ampuis. Among the critics and wine connoisseurs, among whom the winery enjoys an excellent reputation, it is known as Château d'Ampuis È. Guigal. Today it is the son Marcel Guigal who runs the winery. He has no less ambition than to always bring the best wines to the market. Praising words of the wine critics and highest evaluations show that he meets this claim. And this with an annual production of about seven million bottles. With this Marcel Guigal shows that quality and mass production are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Reference wines from the Rhone Valley

The vineyards of Chateau d'Ampuis are located in the northern Rhone valley. On a total of 62 hectares the vineyards are spread over the Rhone valley. The grape varieties are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, Viognier and Grenache Noir. The harvested grapes are mainly processed into red wines. Only a part of the Viognier harvest is pressed into white wine, otherwise mostly red wines are produced. The Guigal family has a very simple motto for the processing of the grapes: they want to offer wines that are the reference in each area.

Tested and recommended by critics

Especially popular and sought-after are the wines made from the Syrah vines. Not seldomly the critics let themselves be carried away to praise and enthusiasm at tastings of the great Cru. The wines are matured in huge oak barrels, which by the way are produced in the in-house cooperage, over a period of one to four years. Besides the pure red and white wines, a number of cuvees are also produced. These are usually a combination of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, which is considered a typical Rhone combination.
