Finca Museum - unique vines on historic soil

The Denominación de Origien region of Cigales has always been known for its viticulture. The Spanish Civil War brought about a change. As in other regions of Spain, the vines were neglected or cultivated area was striven for and turned into arable land for cereals, as the supply of food had priority over the consumption of stimulants. This, together with the increased demand for quality wine, explains the sharp decline in the production of Cigales wines since the beginning of the twentieth century. But where there is shadow, there is light. The poorest soils were left to the vines and this led to one of the oldest vineyards in the Old World and thus to the highest quality with low quantity.

A courageous step into foreign lands

At the end of the 1990s, Barón de Ley, a leading wine producer from Rioja, ventured to step out of Rioja and into the Cigales region. There was much to suggest that the old vines and the region's extreme climate and the tradition of rosé production were in favour. Since 2009, Luis Chueca has been chief oenologist of the Finca Museum and brings new impetus to the project with his youthful ambition and his commitment to winemaking.
