Franconian wine from the Main

In addition to exquisite wine enjoyment, the wine-growing region of Franconia offers a beautiful green landscape that invites visitors to go hiking. In addition, the locals celebrate excellent wine festivals where Franconian wine flows incessantly. Between Aschaffenburg in the west and Bamberg in the east, Würzburg is the center of Franconian vineyards. The vineyards along the Main enjoy many intense hours of sunshine and sometimes have one or two steep slopes to offer. Dry white wines in Bocksbeutel are the specialty of the Franconian winegrowers. And those who have not yet tried Silvaner from Franconia can look forward to a strong, charismatic white wine.

Silvaner wine from Franconia

There is no question about it: Silvaner is the leading grape variety for Franconian wines. The green Silvaner grape is demanding, discreet but steady in yield, always fresh and often finely acidic. It is a cross between the grape varieties Traminer and Austrian White. For the white wine variety, the soils in which the vines grow are eminently important and flavor-defining. For example, loamy soils often produce a fairly neutral Silvaner. The soils of Franconian vineyards are mostly different. Muschelkalk, Keuper and Buntsandstein shape the Franconian wine particularly expressive and spicy. A powerful Silvaner is found in the glass, exuding a fruity and sometimes earthy bouquet. Silvaner wine is characterized by everyday suitability and is thus an excellent companion to many dishes.

Bacchus is a guest at Franconian wine festivals

Bacchus is the Roman god of wine, fertility and intoxicating festivities. It goes back to the Greek god Dionysus, who was given much attention and importance in cultural history. The grape variety Bacchus is a cross between Silvaner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. The plump and green grape achieves good yields and provides a high must weight. In general, the vine, which produces a light yellow wine, is less in demand in Germany. But in Rheinhessen and in the Franconian wine-growing region, the largest vineyards are found with the divine grape variety. Together with the Palatinate, about 1600 ha are planted with Bacchus. On the wine festivals in Franconia Bacchus may not be missing of course. It is usually enjoyed semi-dry here. The wine festivals in Franconia begin in March, they extend over quite enjoyable months until November. Moreover, they are not only popular with the locals, but also attract many tourists every year. They enjoy the exceptional quality of Franconian wines, such as Bacchus. At the same time, wine culture is extensively celebrated, while the enjoyment of exquisite drops is in the foreground.

Franconian grape varieties

The wine-growing region of Franconia is particularly well known for its white grape varieties. In contrast to other German wine-growing regions, Riesling is precisely not the white wine of first choice. Instead, Franconian winemakers vinify white wine primarily from the following grape varieties:

  • (Grüner) Silvaner
  • Müller-Thurgau
  • Kerner
  • Pinot Blanc
  • Bacchus
  • Scheurebe

More and more red wines from Franconia are coming into fashion. Often these red grape varieties are found on the vineyards around the Main River:

  • Regent
  • Dornfelder
  • Pinot Noir
  • Domina
  • Black Riesling

The Bocksbeutel: The suitable vessel for Franconian wine

As characteristic as Franconian wine itself is, as individual is its container: the Bocksbeutel. No, this is not an animal container. The Bocksbeutel from Franconia has a short, narrow neck. The wide, elliptical belly of the bottle serves as its foundation. It is a real eye-catcher and quickly catches the eye. At the same time, it is as typical for Franconia as it is exclusive for Franconian wines. For a good 250 years now, the Bocksbeutel (glass) has served as a vessel for Franconian wine. Although it may also be used for very few, selected Baden wines, the term Bocksbeutel is now protected by copyright. The bottle shape is also found in Portugal; however, the term "Bocksbeutel" is not permitted there. In fact, Bocksbeutel stands for Franconian quality wines. The capacity of the unusual bottle starts at 0.25 liters. It ends in the magnum version at 3.0 l. The "Bocksbeutel PS" has been in circulation since 2015. This is a slightly redesigned bottle shape, with a somewhat slimmer design.

Franconia

The wine-growing region of Franconia has been established in Germany since the beginning of the Middle Ages. In contrast to the Franconia region, the wine-growing area of the same name is located exclusively in the Free State of Bavaria. Along the Main River, the productive vineyards extend from Aschaffenburg to east of Würzburg to Bamberg. The most important product is Franconian wine, a quality wine that is mostly sold in the typical Bocksbeutel. Franconian winegrowers specialize in white wine. A special focus and reputation has the Silvaner - fresh, fruity, fabulous. The mineral soils in the wine-growing region give Franconian wine a special expression and character. The climate is mostly continental. The average annual temperature is 9°C.
