The Frescobaldi family traces its earliest roots back to the year 1000.
Marchesi de' Frescobaldi - active in viticulture for 31 generations
True importance was given above all in the time of the rise of the banks and the aristocracy in the northern Italian city states of the Middle Ages. The earliest recorded mention of viticulture by the Frescobaldis dates back to the early 14th century. Since then, the Florentine noble family supplied many European sovereign courts and rose to become one of the oldest and most powerful families in European viticulture. Vittorio Frescobaldi led the fortunes of the family winery with the support of his two brothers Ferdinando and Leonardo, and in 1980 the company was converted into a joint stock company. In 1995, the Frescobaldis then entered into a joint venture with Mondavi, together they took over the Luce della Vita and Ornellaia wine estates. After the Mondavi sale in 2005, Frescobaldi is the sole owner of this renowned wine estate. The 31st generation has meanwhile taken over the helm under Lamberto Frescobaldi and continues to develop it successfully.
Frescobaldi - An umbrella for many Italian wineries
Today, the Frescobaldis own 9 wineries with a total vineyard area of 850 hectares, in Tuscany in various DOC and DOCG areas, and in Friuli.
The highest estate"Castello Pomino" in the DOC Pomino is a monopoly site of the Frescobaldis and mainly planted with white grape varieties - respectively white wine - .
Near Florence, in the heart of the Chianti Rùfina area, lies the"Castello di Nipozzano", and Tenuta Rèmole, near Montespertoli the Tenuta Castiglioni, the place where the wine-growing history of the Frescobaldi family began 700 years ago.
The "Tenuta Castelgiocondo" in the DOCG Montalcino is the place where the Brunello was "born", in the south of Tuscany, in the Maremma, the Tenuta Ammiraglia vineyard was added. Since 2005, the family has been the sole owner of the world-famous Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in Bolgheri, and for some time now, the historic Attems wine estate in Friuli has also been part of the family empire.
Frescobaldi dares new ways
For some years now, there has been an innovative and very interesting cooperation with the high-security prison on the island of Gorgona, 32 nautical miles off Livorno. Here Frescobaldi agronomists and oenologists work together with the prisoners. They are professionally instructed in viticulture practices to help them reintegrate into society after their release. The viticulture is organic. The result is excellent and exceptional wines with a lot of personality.
Art, economy and politics
Marchesi de' Frescobaldi has historically been active outside of the wine industry for centuries, whether as treasurer to the British Crown or as patron of the arts in Tuscan cities. This tradition has also been preserved, as members of the Frescobaldi family continue to support agriculture in Italy and promote the arts and culture in Florence and the surrounding area.
And these are the grape varieties grown at Frescobaldi
- Sangiovese
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Chardonnay
