The history of the old Fritz Haag winery
The beginnings of the Fritz Haag vine yard on the Moselle are so long ago that they can no longer be specifically dated. The first documented mention dates back to 1605, at which time the village was still called Dusemond. Only since 1925 has the village been called Brauneberg, in order to promote the exposed sites of Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr. The additional name of the Fritz Haag winery - Dusemonder Hof - can also be traced back to this history.
Wilhelm Haag, born in 1937, gave the Fritz Haag wine estate some particularly great vintages before his son Oliver Haag - a studied enologist with experience from the Dönnhof and Karthäuserhof wine estates - took over the business in 2005 to run it together with wife Jessica until today.
The natural conditions
The Fritz Haag winery has vineyards in the top sites of Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr, where the Riesling can develop its full facet.
The Soil
The vineyards of the Fritz Haag winery are pure southern slate sites, the soil consists of weathered Devonian slate, which grows again and again from the depths. This soil is ideally suited for Riesling, which is able to fully develop here and lends the wines mineral potential.
The sites
The Brauneberger Juffer is a 32 hectare site on the left bank of the Moselle, opposite the village of Brauneberg.
The Juffer Sonnenuhr covers about 10.5 ha and is warmer than the Brauneberger Juffer. It is, so to speak, the absolute fillet piece of the Brauneberg. The wines from this site are characterised by their particular depth and power, while at the same time being light-footed and multifaceted.
Man and nature in harmony
At the Fritz Haag vineyard, great importance is attached to natural and sustainable cultivation and production. The wine should be allowed to develop gently, and traditional craftsmanship is used to achieve this.
The wine style
Purism is the keyword that most aptly characterizes the Fritz Haag wines. The balance between sweetness, freshness, minerality and a filigree lightness is perfect. The right time of harvest and selective grape harvesting determine the character of the wine, as does the degree of noble rot (botrytis) in Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen.
