Above the Duero Valley, the Frutos Villar family has earned a place in the wine history of the Castilla y León region.
Frutos Villar - Castilian skills
Since 1920, Frutos Villar has been running a winery in the small red wine enclave of Toro, from which powerful and deep dark wines have been produced for thousands of years. Today, the winery has its own cellars in all 4 wine regions around Valladolid, in DO Rueda, DO Ribera del Duero, DO Cigales and DO Toro, and thus has all the facilities to produce award-winning wines.
Frutos Villar and the winery in Toro
Viticulture in Toro has always enjoyed a splendid reputation. As one of the oldest red wine growing areas, appreciated by both Romans and Cistercian monks, tradition is simply part of it. The powerful wine from the vineyards east of Zamora, which a few years ago was still very alcoholic, was recommended even by the King of León. Such an illustrious past leads to a present that is no less prestigious. Because the Tinta de Toro, a variety of Tempranillo, then as now stands for opulent wines, originating from extremes.
Frutos Villar wines
The approximately 95 hectares of Frutos Villar in Toro are characterised by gravel soils and strong all-day sunshine. Rainfall is scarce and occurs only at irregular intervals. As a result, the different grape varieties nourish themselves with lush colour and tannins, which underline the distinctive character of Frutos Villar's Toro wines. The winery cultivates a few hectares of land in Ribera del Duero, Ruedo and Cigales, in addition to the Toro D.O. vineyards. In addition, Frutos Villar brings together grapes from a large number of small wineries to meet the demand for its fruit-intensive red wines. The result is a range of autochthonous and international grape varieties, from which both wines with Denominations of Origin and simple but tasty country wines are produced:
- Tinta de Toro
- Verdejo
- Tempranillo
- Albillo
- Garnacha
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
- Malbec
- Palomino y Viura
The ascent to a top winery on the Duero
The quality offensive that Frutos Villlar has been pursuing since 1920 in its own winery in Toro is paying off very well for the family-run winery. Demand increased steadily and soon a second winery was purchased in Cigales, which also expanded the portfolio with sparkling rosé wines. In 1988, Bodegas Santa Eulalia in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, a top area for full-bodied and complex red wines, became part of the Frutos Villar estate. In 1990, when a winery was added to the Rueda area and with it fruity white wines, Frutos Villar was able to draw on the full potential of the terroir around Valladolid, which is full of character.
