Glenelly Estate History
The Cape Winelands is a temperate region situated at the 35th parallel in the south of South Africa. Glenelly Estate was acquired by May de Lencquesaing in 2003. She already owned an estate and vineyards in France at that time. For example the famous Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande a Grand Cru from Pauillac in the Boudeaux. This once belonged to the IDA Valley estate founded in 1682 by Simon van der Stel.
As it was 300 years ago, it started to grow grapes again. The fruit trees were replaced by vines, because her vision was to make the most of the special soils and the uniquely prevailing microclimate in the valley. Because this is where she saw the great potential for this region. She was strongly supported by the local community.
The design of the wine labels is a stamp from the 18th century, which is applied in memory of the Glenelly family. This pays tribute to the Glenelly's commitment to working in the wine industry which continues to this day. They were also awarded the title of "Royal Wine Broker" in 1783. Today this family tradition is still carried on by their grandchildren.
Glenelly Community
May de Lencquesaing was always keen to make a positive contribution to the community with which she was always closely associated. With great passion and exemplary commitment, special attention was always given to the social development of the Glenelly community. This includes housing, education and recreation, and education for the children of her co-workers. Their belief in investing in their future led to the establishment of the Glenelly Care Center for farm children and the Glenelly Recreation Center for farm workers in 2010.

Glenelly Viticulture
Winemaker Luke O'Cuinneagain and assistant Jerome Likwa strive to make Glenelly wines as naturally as possible with wild yeast fermentation and no acidification. The team takes a minimal intervention approach to winemaking, but intense sorting and care is taken when receiving grapes. They use France's best-known coopers (mostly from Taransaud, Boutes and Sylvain) to ensure gentle and precise ageing and to preserve the identity of Glenelly's terroir. The eco-friendly winery represents a unique tool for the winemaker, operating by gravity flow on 5 floors half underground, but also helps to ensure a very respectful and green footprint.
