Top wines from Spitz an der Donau - Gritsch has them. From steep slopes, by terraces, from top sites. Axpoint, 1000-Eimerberg, Singerriedel - finally, all the grapes go to the Mauritiushof and Kalmuck cellars. Tradition and innovative spirit in unity. Of course, we don't miss out on this and taste the one or other Federspiel or Smaragd at the FJ Gritsch winery.
South-facing steep slopes characterise the estate's vineyards. Green Veltliner, Riesling and also Neuburger like this. The vines ripen magnificently, sharpen regional aromas and develop an intense minerality. Grape variety and location are responsible for the local character wines. And this since the 13th century, the hour of birth of one of the most traditional wineries in the Wachau.
Wachau wine by tradition...
Wine-growing has been in the Gritsch family's blood since the former Mauritiushof vineyard came into their possession in 1799. Where monks used to drag the grapes to the courtyard next to the parish church, the Gritsch family now came and went. The knowledge about soil, climate and the terroir increased by year to year. And every vintage was followed by one that scored points for more finesse and more enjoyment. You can taste the peak of this development today, whether directly at the Mauritiushof, the Kalmuck Cellar and at VINELLO also outside the Danube Valley.
...and innovation
The Mauritiushof is history, the Kalmuck Keller the future. The modern wine cellar, equipped with the most innovative technology, shows the modern side of the winery. The cellar shows from afar that tradition is not neglected here either. The facade of the Kalmuck Cellar is decorated with the typical Kalmuck check pattern and nestles into the landscape. In the depths of the building the wine is aged with finesse and care. From now on the wine matures in large ice-cooled stainless steel tanks, decorated wooden barrels and also in concrete eggs.
The vineyards
Another special feature of the Gritsch Winery is the location of Dürnstein-Burg within the Dürnstein castle complex. Walled in by the old fortifications, terraces are piled up here, so that mechanical harvesting is out of the question. The situation is similar with Atzberg, whose plateaus between the stone walls are hardly recognisable as such. The site was used until the 1950s, but was abandoned due to its inaccessibility. Today, there is a lively bustle again on Atzberg. Franz Josef Gritsch is also often found here, tending and cultivating the Veltliner vines in a sloping position.
Gritsch wines at VINELLO
The sun disappears over the vineyards, the Danube glitters, as does the Federspiel Grüner Veltliner from the Axpoint vineyard in a glass. The Wachau sends its greetings, we toast to them. You too should take the time for a filigree and award-winning white wine from Spitz an der Donau. The Gritsch wines, a character study of the terroir, from tradition and modernity, you will find here, the taste experience in the glass.
