Herencia Altés - a childhood dream
The foundations for the Herencia Altés project were laid a long time ago. The Altés family has been cultivating their vineyards around the village of Batea for generations. These grapes are to be given their own personality by means of handmade wines.
Although Terra Alta is a not so well known region - hidden in the south-east of Catalonia and bordering Aragón and Valencia - it is one of the largest wine regions in Catalonia. Especially due to the many ancient Garnatxa bush vines, this region is one of the best regions in Spain and produces wines with a special degree of quality and authenticity.
The village of Batea is built on Roman and Moorish foundations and has a beautiful historical centre, with the church in particular being a sign of the past splendour. Batea is the most important wine-growing village in Terra Alta with 50% of the production. Most of the grapes are sold to cooperatives or larger companies outside the region. With Herencia Altés, Núria Altés is fulfilling a dream of making the Terra Alta more important and the true qualities of these wonderful old vines more important.
The vineyards are located within the municipality of Batea. The largest and oldest vineyard is the Benufet. It is located at 450 m above sea level, on one of the highest parts of Batea. The vines were planted at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, they are among the Garnatxa Blanca vines with the lowest and most concentrated yields in Spain.
