K - stands for the beginning

K-Vintners - Winemaker Charles Smith opened the doors of his first winery in December 2001.
His first vintage was 330 cases of 1999 Syrah, which he sold from the back of his 1987 Chevy Astro van.
Syrah '99 K immediately showed that not only could he produce an exceptional wine, he had created a brand that people would remember.
On the label was a single large black "K" big enough for everyone in the room to see.
It is the same iconic and unforgettable black "K" that is on his wine bottles today.

100% Washington Wine

As the manager of a rock band, Charles Smith toured Europe in the 1990s and discovered his fascination with wine. Back in Seattle, Washington State, in the far northwest of the USA, he took over a small wine shop and made first contacts with wine producers in the emerging wine region between the Columbia Valley and the Blue Mountains. In Walla Walla, he met Christophe Baron, a Frenchman, who inspired him to produce his first own wine. Baron sold him grapes - and with the Syrah from his Cailloux Vineyard, the first K-Vintners wine was produced in 1999. Smith's great talent was finding grapes from the best vineyards of different producers and making something truly distinctive from them. The K Vintners series was born.

K Vintners deals with small batches of single site wines made from:

• Syrah
• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Grenache
• Tempranillo
• Sangiovese

Field blends of these grapes are all hand picked,gently pressed and fermented with natural yeast.
