The story of Kavalan may fill only a few pages, but the genesis of this Taiwanese distillery is all the more unconventional compared to its European and Japanese counterparts.
It began in 2002, when Taiwan joined the WTO and the state monopoly on the production of spirits was abolished. Tian-Tsai Lee, founder and president of the Taiwanese food company King Car Group, sees the time has come for the realization of his personal life's dream - the founding of Taiwan's first private whisky distillery.
Kavalan - Whisky made in Taiwan
The central figure in the creation of Kavalan Taiwan Whisky becomes the chemist Ian Chang, who completes his training as a Master Blender in Scotland with flying colors. Together with the British chemist and whisky expert Dr. Jim Swan, who actively supports the company until his death, he lays the foundation for Kavalan.
In April 2005, construction of the King Car Kavalan distillery begins, and after just nine months it is completed in December 2005. In March of the following year, Kavalan Single Malt Whisky finally sees the light of day.
