Kleine Zalze History

Nicholas Cleef acquired Kleine Zalze in 1695 and his belief that Stellenbosch had the potential to produce world-class wines led him to develop Kleine Zalze into a wine estate. Cleef's wine range has been developed as a tribute to his vision and conviction, which have made Kleine Zalze a successful quality producer since its inception.

Kleine Zalze vineyards and wines

The vineyards are located on different slopes, soils and sites, this is where the vines that bear the grapes of Kleine Zalze wines grow, these are exposed to the fresh sea breeze from the coast just 15 kilometres away. This cool climate produces delicate aromas while providing optimal growing and ripening conditions for our grapes. Kleine Zalze's award-winning wines are renowned for their unique South African character with vibrant, full-bodied flavours that reflect the local climate and terroir of Stellenbosch.
With their classic composition and complementary relationship with food, Kleine Zalze wines provide a refreshing taste experience reminiscent of the Stellenbosch landscape in South Africa.

Kleine Zalze sustainability

From an environmental point of view, the development of Kleine Zalze and the adjacent De Zalze Golf Estate is subject to the winery's clause that the environmental conditions and the value of the property are under the utmost sustainable consideration and must be continually enhanced.
The system certifies that the grapes and wines are produced according to environmentally sustainable production methods. Compliance with the IPW guidelines assures buyers and consumers that the production process is environmentally sound and that the minimum food safety requirements are met.
Kleine Zalze also actively supports local charities and organisations involved in community building in Africa.

Kleine Zalze Lodge hospitality

De Zalze Lodge is the farm's own Cape Dutch style country house overlooking the lush vineyards and stunning mountains of Stellenbosch. The setting under ancient oak trees is both delightful and relaxing, overlooking the Kleine Zalze golf course and surrounding gardens and vineyards. The tranquil atmosphere is ideal for enjoying fine food and excellent wine.
