


Fattoria Le Mortelle - Wines from the heart of Maremma
The Fattoria Le Mortelle winery is located a few kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia, in the southern part of Tuscany, in an impressive landscape between hills and sea, surrounded by historical towns. The Marchesi Antinori family has been working on vineyards and the new cellar since 1999. Historical documents from the 19th century show that they have always owned land here and that in 1863 they owned Poggio franco, one of the best single vineyards of the estate, and other plots. Fattoria Le Mortelle today consists of 270 hectares of land, 170 of which are vineyards, an old farmhouse and a modern cellar built into the hill.
Le Mortelle. Innovation in the vineyards
The Marchesi Antinori family is convinced that this wine-growing area, which is still emerging in Italy, has a high destination for the production of quality wines and that the terroir and characteristics of the grape varieties cultivated here can be expressed here in an ideal way. The 170 hectares of vineyards are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, some white grape varieties such as the native Vermentino and Ansonica, and Viognier, as well as a small proportion of Carménère. The soils are medium-heavy, sandy and clayey, the composition is mainly characterized by silicates and clay, in some places very skeleton-rich.
An underground wine cellar in the hill for Le Mortelle
The winery is situated on a hill where the wine cellar has been built into the top of the hill, thus harmonising perfectly with the surrounding landscape. The aim was to minimize the impact on the environment by using natural materials and using the existing rocks in the depth of the soil with their thermal regulation.
The wine cellar is cylindrical, like a snail's shell, on three levels. Inside, all the phases of the winemaking process take place, exploiting the natural gradient, from the moment the grapes arrive, through vinification, to storage and ageing in barriques on the deepest level. This process takes place completely without the use of pumps, which gives the wines a higher quality and at the same time saves energy.
