Organic wines from Krems and Stein on the Danube - nature that's got it all
Lesehof Stagård in Austria has a long tradition, as the winery is about as old as the city of Krems on the Danube itself. The old cellar of Stagård, once founded under the name Lesehof Stift Tegernsee, has existed for almost 1,000 years and the Lesehof since 1424. There are records of Benedictine monks planting wine and cultivating apricots (i.e. apricots - classical for the Wachau region).
The Stagårds take over the winery and wineyard
Since 1786 - proudly owned by six generations - the Stagård family's reading farm has been entirely dedicated to wine growing and vinification. It was Urban Tore Stagård's father who went to Scandinavia with the name Karl and brought the striking "å" from Sweden into the name. In 2008, Urban finally took over the Lesehof from his father and together with his wife Dominique, they were clear about what was to change, what was to be their signature in the Kremstal.
Close to nature, spontaneously fermented and long matured
Cornerstones of the Stagard wine philosophy are quickly outlined: Focus on Riesling, not so much on Veltliner, spontaneous fermentation instead of pure yeast, long ageing on the yeast and gentle filtration. Vegan vinification and organic cultivation in the vineyard. The Stagård style can be experienced most clearly in the site wines, all Rieslings except Goldberg, which have such illustrious names as Steiner Schreck, Steiner Hund or Steiner Gaisberg.
The very special Stagård wines
In addition to the vineyard classics, there are creations such as the stoneware Riesling, for which the musts of the best grapes from the best vineyards are placed in a 750-litre stoneware tank, where they ferment spontaneously and can refine on the full yeast for a year. For those who like it more sparkling, the Rock 'n' Riesling is recommended. A homage to the Moselle - a wine with a wonderfully fruity bite, balanced by crisp acidity and an elegant lightness with low alcohol.
The team at Lesehof Stagård is involved with a lot of heart, knowledge and traditional commitment every day, which enables them to produce wonderful Austrian wines.
