Michel Chapoutier - winegrower, wine presser, wine connoisseur
Chapoutier is a prestigious wine cellar founded in 1808 in Tain-L' Hermitage, in the northern Rhône. The family business cultivates 300 hectares of the best vineyards, including first-class slopes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Crozes-Hermitage, as well as overseas.
Change of leadership and style in the 80s
When Michel Chapoutier took over the family business in the 1980s, it had grown into one of the largest wine producers and bottlers, but its structures were outdated. Michel, a strict advocate of the terroir, broke with some traditions. The yield of the vineyards was reduced to half, the ageing of the barrels was modernized and in the top locations he introduced special cuvées, which mainly reflect the terroir and not the wine cellar. At the same time, however, he preserved the classics that have made the House of Chapoutier famous.
