Mallorca

(45)

The beautiful Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca is committed to quality in its viticulture. This results in a wine that is very present and can convince with fruity aromas. The dense texture of many Mallorcan wines promises full-bodied enjoyment. Those who visit Mallorca exclusively for the capital Palma and S'Arenal have missed the beauty of the island and the delicious wine.

Exquisite and exclusive: Mallorca's wine

The Balearic island of Mallorca has two popular wine regions. The very small D.O.P. Binissalem is located in the centre of the island and is the epitome of wine from Mallorca. Plà i Llevant, the much larger D.O.P., is located on the eastern side. To the north and along the west coast is the Serra de Tramuntana - Costa Nord wine region. The excellent climatic conditions and the good soil lead to excellent wine in all wine regions. The winegrowers of Mallorca focus on quality. Each year they vinify in their Bodegas (wine cellars) in about 48.000 hl of delicious, first-class and exquisite wine. The demand for wine from Mallorca is growing and exports have recently started to increase.

Binissalem is the heart region for wine from the island of Mallorca

Binissalem is a small municipality in the heart of the Mediterranean island. If the words Mallorca and wine fall in one sentence, the next begins with the name of the small, traditional wine-growing region guaranteed. Binissalem is the heart of wine from Mallorca. The area is a D.O. The name stands for "Denominación de Origen". It distinguishes products with Spanish origin. As D.O.P. ( Denominación de Origen Protegida) wines from Binissalem are protected in their origin. The high, fulfilled quality controls of the grape varieties are thus documented. Since 1988, these wines from Mallorca have carried the prestigious designation. Incidentally, the wine region from this small area is the first Spanish island region to be allowed to bear the designation. The bottles of wine are labelled with D.O. if at least 50% of the grape variety Manto Negro is present.

Mallorca red wine from Binissalem

Binissalem is a beautiful, natural and green region in Mallorca. The red grape varieties are protected from the stormy sea wind by the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. The grape varieties Manto Negro, Callet or some Tempranillo thrive here in high altitude vineyards. With characteristic fruity notes of blackberry or cherry and a well-balanced spiciness, the red wine exudes a fragrant, slightly smoky bouquet. Limestone provides the vine with the underground to develop a more intense colour. The rock also favours the acidity and alcohol content. A red wine from this part of Mallorca is certainly powerful. The optimum drinking temperature for a red from Binissalem is between 15 and 18ºC.

Autochthonous, red grape varieties from Mallorca

Mallorca has both white and red autochthonous grape varieties. More numerous are those that will later produce an enjoyable red wine. They are called:

  • Callet
  • Gorgollassa
  • Manto Negro
  • Fogoneu

Other varieties for red wine from Mallorca

There are other red grape varieties on the Mediterranean island. For the wine from Mallorca, for example, the winegrowers cultivate

  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Shiraz
  • Tempranillo
  • Pinot Noir

The great wine region of Mallorca Plà i Llevant

Plà i Llevant is not quite as famous as the Binissalem wine region. But it is much larger in area. Part of Plà i Llevant is situated on the east coast of the Baleraren Island, where the water is light blue. The coast has sandy and rocky beaches. From here, the wine-growing area extends far into the island of Mallorca. In the extensive vineyards there are white and red vines. The Mallorca white wine is primarily made from Prensal Blanc. The white grape is autochthonous to Mallorca. For the fresh and spicy white wines, Prensal Blanc is often an integral part.

In the Plà i Llevant wine-growing region, red wine is made from various grape varieties. However, the most commonly used grape variety is the indigenous Fogoneu. The area near Felanitx produces many of the plump purple grapes. Fogoneu is subtly fruity and acidic. This is why the red grape variety is presented as a cuvée in combination with Callet and Manto Negro. Plà i Llevant, like Binissalem, is a protected designation of origin and provides all connoisseurs with tasty quality wine.
