Winery Marqués de Riscal - Wines from Rioja and Rueda for over 150 years
The Bodega Marqués de Riscal was founded in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga in Elciego and is one of the oldest wineries in Rioja. Since then, Marqués de Riscal has been setting international and national standards in wine. The region of Álava, part of Rioja and located in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, is characterised by a mixture of continental and Atlantic climate.
Marqués de Riscal - the avant-garde from Rioja
The bodega was able to bottle its first wines just 4 years after opening. A short time later the first successes were achieved when Marqués de Riscal was the first non-French winery to receive a certificate of honour at the Bordeaux Wine Fair. After more than 100 years, the company started the production of white wines in Rueda and other production sites followed promptly. Today Marqués de Riscal not only owns several wineries but also the Marqués de Riscal City of Wine, an enotourism centre in the small Elciego with a luxury hotel and starred restaurant.
The eye-catcher of the City of Wine
Probably the most striking building in the City of Wine is the hotel - designed by the famous Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry. It symbolises the innovative and avant-garde spirit of the Marqués de Riscal. It reflects the colours of the wines of Marqués de Riscal:
- Pink, like red wine
- Gold, like the wickerwork on the Riscal bottles
- Silver, like the foil closure on the bottle neck
