The Mitolo family brings together two well-known wine nations to combine the best of them: Australian terroir and Italian traditions. Together with Ben Glaetzer, they launched a new brand that is now a name in the Australian wine world.

The Mitolo family

A piece of Italy in Australia

The Mitolo family, originally Italian immigrants from Abruzzo, began growing wine in Australia in the 1950s. While it was originally just a hobby they brought back from their homeland, this changed abruptly when the famous Australian winemaker Ben Glaetzer, a friend of the family, helped the Mitolos to make a wine of real greatness from the family drink.

In 1999, Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer sat down together for over 5 hours to discuss the basics of the wine they wanted to create and wrote down the results on a napkin:

  • individuality
  • integrity
  • quality
  • purity
  • elegance
  • power

In 2000, the G.A.M. Shiraz was released - named after Frank's children Gemma, Alex and Marco.

Is this really Australia?

The Mitolos do not cultivate the grapes themselves, but they get their grapes by the Lopresti family, also Italian immigrants. With a good feeling for the McLaren Vale, they produce vintage material of the best quality, which is essential for the Mitolo wines to meet their standards. With its hills and fertile soils, this region is not unlike the Mediterraneum.

Deep clay soils are contrasted by the fresh sea air, so that the strong, complex flavour is nevertheless accompanied by a freshness that takes the weight off the wine. At the end of the summer, just before the harvest, the soils dry out, giving the grapes a concentrated aroma as the plant tries to keep the water in. The Loprestis also cultivate Italian varieties, whose wines stand out as small jewels in the Mitolos' portfolio.

The vines of the Loprestis

A successful friendship

The cellar is permeated by Ben Glaetzer's influence. According to his philosophy the wine should develop itself without too much human influence, the fermentation takes place cool. Barrels from different manufacturers are used to have the optimal vessel for each wine available for ageing.

Ben Glaetzer attaches great importance to the vinification of individual sites, a view that Frank Mitolo shares and which once brought the two winemakers together.
