More information

The Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG from Tenuta Montefalco by Lungarotti is a powerful red wine from Umbria with considerable ageing potential.
This Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG flows into the glass in deep ruby red with violet nuances. The nose develops a very rich, very complex and harmonious, long-lasting bouquet with multi-layered aromas of red fruits, accompanied by aromas reminiscent of cocoa, sweet spices, quinine and elegant wood tones. On the palate, this concentrated red wine from Umbria presents itself with dense, ripe tannins, a strong structure, fruity, with a fresh, pleasant acidity and a very long, fruity finish with nuances of roasted aromas in the aftertaste.

Vinification of the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG from Tenuta Montefalco by Lungarotti

The autochthonous local grape variety Sagrantino is harvested manually in mid-September. The vineyards at the winery in Turrita di Montefalco face south-west and the vines grow on shallow soils with loose, sandy loam and calcareous subsoil. After the grapes are harvested, maceration takes place on the skins in stainless steel tanks for around 28 days. After removal of the marc, the wine is matured for 12 months in 30 hl French oak barrels, followed by light filtration and ageing in the bottle for 3 years.

With the right storage conditions, Montefalco Sagrantino can be kept for many years. Sagrantino is considered to be one of the varieties with the highest absolute polyphenol content. It is lightly filtered before bottling and can therefore present sediment. When drunk in moderation, it is said to have a high antioxidant effect.

According to tradition, it seems that Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstauffen gave this grape variety its name. For centuries, it was cultivated in the gardens of the monasteries of Montefalco and miraculously survived the phylloxera epidemic at the beginning of the 20th century.

Wine recommendation for the Lungarotti Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG

This impressive, complex red wine goes particularly well with roasted and grilled red meat, suckling pig, game preparations with sauces, pheasant, pigeon, venison, spicy and piquant cheeses. Also an excellent meditation wine for an evening by the fire.
