Pagos de Obanos - Wine from the Way of St. James

The Pagos de Obanos winery is located in the town of the same name in the province of Navarre and specialises mainly in wine growing and sales. The estate was founded in 1993 and is the largest member of the Vitilia Group, an association of four wineries. The village of Orbanos is located not far to the east of the famous 11th century bridge Puente la Reina  on the Way of St. James.

The vineyard area is about 400 hectares, where both Spanish and international grape varieties are cultivated. The vineyards extend over the Valdizarbe and the Tierra Estella. In the Valdizarbe, depending on the location, there are soils of grey marl, clay and limestone with a high iron content in some areas, while in the Tierra Estella there are also marls of a different colour and deep clay soils with gravel overlays. Viticulture at Pagos de Obanoz

In the vineyards the yield is deliberately reduced in order to increase the quality of the wines. A strict selection of the grapes is also carried out. The management of the vineyard and cellar is the responsibility of the oenologist Luz Martinez, who has ensured a considerable increase in quality in recent years. Under his aegis works a whole team of winemakers who produce the wines of Bodegas Orvalaiz. 

In the cellar of Pagos de Obanos

In the cellar Bodegas Orvalaiz has modern technology, which ensures a high quality standard. Due to the large vineyard area, a large number of tanks are required for fermentation and maturation. 36 tanks with 50000 litres of filling capacity and 1500 barrels from American and French oak are ready to form the grapes to the wines which distinguish Pagos de Obanos. The top of the range is the Cuvée Septentrion, whose name is an allusion to the northern location of the growing area in Spain. Besides, there are mainly red and rosé wines, typical for the Spanish viticulture.
