Giovanni Panizzi bought in 1979 the estate Santa Margherita. After some experiments, in 1989 he presented the first bottles of his Vernaccia di San Gimignano with a label, that is still used today. Other vineyards were bought, new vineyards planted and the cellar brought on a modern level and the estate Santa Margherita was finally called Azienda Agricola Panizzi.

Gambero Rosso describes Giovanni Panizzi as an "indomitable winemaker who resists the urge to unify and level out the Tuscan wine world."
