Sun on your face, Pecorino in your hand
On the heights of the Abruzzo Apennines, shepherding a pack of sheep, in the tall grass, under a blue sky; a little tear of the Pecorino grape comes just in time to pick a little piece of happiness. At least that's what the sheep were doing. Up here, the autochthonous pecorino grape is at home, it has thrived here for thousands of years. And hardly anyone seemed to be interested in it. A few vintners tried to cultivate the robust but also very disease-prone grape variety - with moderate success. The effort was too big, the yield too small, not worth the effort. Pecorino fell out of favour and was soon forgotten.
It was not until 1982 that the Pecorino got the interest of the vintner Guido Cocci Grifoni, who, on one of his walks through the wine regions, rediscovered the almost extinct grape variety. He brought Pecorino to new fame, made the Italian white wine known beyond the borders of the regions of Marche and Abruzzo, and was constantly confronted with the problem that the fruity and spicy white wines bore the same name as the world-famous sheep's cheese. La pecora , Italian for sheep, stands for many delicious specialties - like the Pecorino white wine. The fact that the straw-yellow and fresh wine is still around is definitely great. Sheep knows what is good.
Pecorino white wine - heavenly taste for man and sheep
The Pecorino wine from Abruzzo and Marche is blessed with intense fruit aromas, a fine acidity and sparkling minerality. The floral bouquet is drawn by ripe apples, yellow fruits, acacia, jasmine and licorice. A pronounced acidity combines with moderate alcohol to create a high quality premium wine that is sometimes more reminiscent of a red wine than a typical dry white. The bright yellow color sparkles with light green reflections in the glass, the aroma enchants the nose with strong spicy aromas, the palate enjoys the fruity and mineral experience. Pecorino wine knows what it does and what it does, it does well. At any time of day, in any mood, with hearty vegetable casseroles, fish and white meat.
Our Pecorino recommendation
- Trabocchetto Pecorino Colline Pescaresi IGT - Talamonti
Straw-yellow Pecorino from Abruzzo - how could it be otherwise than freshly fruity, with a bouquet of apple, pear and floral aromas of a flower meadow. Pleasantly dry and with a fine acidity, the Trabocchetto Pecorino Colline Pescaresi from Talamonti presents itself beautifully balanced and soft on the finish. A glass of the classic Pecorino harmonises with grilled fish and vegetables - so light the grill, get out the deck chair and pour some Pecorino.
