The richness of the landscape, the values of tradition, the passion for innovation and experimentation in winemaking - all this is POGGIO LE VOLPI.
History of Poggio le Volpi
To find the roots of the Poggio Le Volpi company, you have to go back a century. It all began in 1920, when Manlio Mergè started producing and trading cask wine and oil. He passed on his passion for the land first to his son Armando and then to his grandson Felice, who turned his dream into reality and in 1996 founded Azienda Agricola Poggio le Volpi in Monte Porzio Catone, an area whose soils are volcanic in origin and therefore naturally fertile. While Armando Mergè breathed life into Monte Porzio Catone, transforming it from a local to a "national" company, Felice, following in his father's entrepreneurial footsteps, became an oenologist and took over the management of Poggio Le Volpi, which is now one of the most interesting wineries in the Lazio region in terms of production and quality.
Quality without changing the typical - the philosophy of Poggio le Volpi
Tradition, identity and territory, but also passion, commitment and experience: these are the values of the company, which for three generations has been working with native grape varieties and fully exploiting the potential of the land. As a result, the wines represent both a modern expression and, at the same time, almost a century of history of a unique wine heritage. The company's philosophy is the result of years of experience in viticulture and is based on an extremely careful style of wines, their typicality, respect for nature and the territory and control of the winemaking process. Thus, the work in the vineyard, the selection of the grapes, the expert staff and the state-of-the-art equipment are undoubtedly the key points of success.
The Lazio wine region- home of Poggio le Volpi
This wine region of almost 50,000 hectares was once considered the wine cellar of Italy. Above all, very good conditions prevail here for red wine varieties such as
- Montepulciano
- Sangiovese
- Merlot and
- Syrah
are present. Monte Porzio Catone stretches over a hilly area just outside Rome, in the Colli Albani area.
It has always been a fertile area, ideal for agricultural cultivation. It is situated on a small side cone of the Lazio volcano, which produced the entire surrounding area of the Castelli Romani, and rises on a block of tufa material. The soil is rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, sulphur and magnesium, lava rock, tufa and sand, compounds that are essential for good drainage and water absorption and therefore for soil fertility. Surrounded by chestnut woods planted in the 18th century and protected in the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani, viticulture and the production of Frascati wine are among the main activities of Monte Porzio Catone. One of the most important wineries is, of course, Poggio Le Volpi, which is located precisely in this area between the slopes of Monte Porzio Catone and the Roman countryside.
