The Jean Stodden Recher Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs is a first-class red wine in the wine glass. In this it shows a wonderfully bright, light red color. After the first swirl, one can perceive a first-class balance in this red wine, as it does not stand out on the glass walls as watery or syrupy or liqueur-like. Poured into a Burgundy goblet, this Old World red wine presents delightfully distinguished aromas of blackberry, mulberry, black currant and blueberry, rounded out by other fruity nuances contributed by barrel aging.
On the palate, the Recher Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs from Jean Stodden starts wonderfully aromatic, fruit-driven and balanced. Some wines are dry on the label, others really are. This red wine belongs to the latter, as it was bottled with just 1.9 grams of residual sugar. Balanced and complex, this powerful red wine presents itself on the palate. Due to the moderate fruit acidity, the Recher Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs flatters with a velvety palate feeling, without lacking freshness. In the finish, this well storable red wine from the wine-growing region of the Ahr finally inspires with exceptional length. There are again hints of black currant and blueberry. In the aftertaste, mineral notes of the soils dominated by slate and weathered rock join in.
Vinification of the Recher Herrenberg Pinot Noir Grosses Gewächs by Jean Stodden
The basis for the balanced Recher Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs from the Ahr are grapes from the grape variety Spätburgunder. In the Ahr, the vines that produce the grapes for this wine grow on soils of slate and weathered rock. Moreover, the grapes of this top wine of Jean Stodden do not grow in the lowlands, but dig their roots into the subsoil in steep slopes. The steep slope cultivation ensures that even in cooler regions with less long vegetation periods, the vines receive a maximum of sun. Recher Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs is an Old World wine through and through, as this German wine breathes an extraordinary European charm that clearly underscores the success of Old World wines. The fact that the Spätburgunder grapes thrive under the influence of a rather cool climate also has an influence on the development of the vintage that cannot be dismissed. This manifests itself, among other things, in particularly long and even grapes and rather moderate alcohol content in the wine. After the hand harvest, the grapes are immediately taken to the winery. Here they are selected and carefully broken up. Fermentation follows in stainless steel tanks and small wood at controlled temperatures. The vinification is followed by a maturation of 19 months in barrique and new oak wood.
