Blauer Portugieser – Characteristics of the Vine & Wine
Blauer Portugieser-Trauben generally produces light, low-acidity wines with a cherry-red colour and notes of berries and herbs. Blauer Portugieser wines are considered fresh, uncomplicated and easy to drink, which is why they are very popular as open wines. These wines are excellent companions to light dishes, Schnitzel and mild cheeses.
When the wines are made from a purposefully reduced harvest, an extended mash fermentation period and finished in barrique, Blauer Portugieser can produce robust, full-bodied and high-quality wines.
It is for this high potential that Blauer Portugieser has been approved for the production of special reserve wines in Rhinehessen. Blauer Portugieser is considered an early ripening varietal and is very prolific. For these reasons it is absolutely essential to conduct controlled harvest limitation in order to produce superior quality wines.
