Riserva Wine - Mature Performance

Riserva refers to DOC or DOCG wines that have aged for months, some of which are aged in wooden barrels or bottles. This alone indicates high-quality wines. The designation Riserva is awarded only to wines that typically age between 2 and 4 years. In some cases, such as with Barolo, the wine ages for as long as 62 months, 18 of which are in wooden barrels. But why do wines age so long in wood? So that Riserva wines can develop and refine their aromas and flavors. The color becomes more intense, the tannins softer, and moreover, wines aged in wood acquire subtle toasty aromas.

A Long Time for Rich Enjoyment

The guidelines for Riserva differ in Italy from region to region. Sometimes, just 24 months are enough for winemakers to present the coveted Riserva label on their bottles. Barbaresco Riserva is aged for even 50 months, 9 of which are in wooden barrels. The Barolo Riserva has the longest aging period. The wine must age for at least 62 months, which is over 5 years. The wine from Piedmont spends 18 months in wood. The result is truly a delight for the palate.
