The Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most famous wineries in the USA. At its headquarters in Napa Valley, top wines are produced that compete with the biggest names in the world.
Robert Mondavi Winery - Napa Valley, Ca.
Born in 1913, after graduating from Stanford University, Robert Mondavi worked in various Californian wineries before the 53-year-old Mondavi founded his own Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966 to prepare authentic USA wines from California, and Mondavi is now regarded as one of the leading lights in the world of wine.
At that time, the enormous wine-growing potential of California was still largely unknown. Robert Mondavi raised this treasure to present the diversity of Californian vineyards and the special microclimate to the world. He was particularly fond of the Napa Valley, where he built the Robert Mondavi Winery, the first new Napa Valley winery since the end of the prohibition period.
Style and grape varieties
Experienced and innovative at the same time, he has since used the excellently tested techniques of the great chateaus in France and Italy, which he combines with his own typical handwriting. Today, the wines are a guarantee of consistently high quality.
Robert Mondavi mainly vinifies the grape varieties
- Chardonnay
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Zinfandel
The terroirs of the Robert Mondavi Winery
Three vineyards belong to the Robert Mondavi Winery today:
To Kalon in Oakville
This vineyard was established in 1868 and has achieved celebrity status today. The name To Kalon comes from ancient Greek and means "supreme beauty". Besides Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon is also grown here, as well as several other red wine varieties. The famous Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and the Fumé Blanc come from this vineyard.
Wappo Hill in the Stags Leap District
The Stags Leap District in Napa Valley is characterised by gravelly and loamy soils that do not store much water and thus put a slight stress on the vines. The air from San Pablo Bay provides cool mornings and evenings. The grapes for the Muscat Canelli are harvested in Wappo Hill.
Los Carneros
In the far south of Napa Valley is Los Carneros (Spanish for the sheep), in the coolest region of the valley due to the ocean winds that prevail here. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive in Los Carneros.
