The Montefalco Rosso DOC from Lungarotti comes into the glass with a bright ruby red color with violet nuances. On the nose, it reveals an intense, complex bouquet with fresh notes of red fruit, ripe cherries, red berries and ripe plums, spicy aromas with hints of quinine, sweet spices and cinnamon and a fine, harmonious woody note in the background. On the palate, this red wine from Umbria delights with round tannins, good structure, fine acidity and a long finish with nuances of roasted aromas and sweet notes in the aftertaste. A very full-bodied, powerful and balanced red wine.
Vinification of the Montefalco Rosso DOC from Tenuta Montefalco by Lungarotti
Sangiovese, Merlot and Sagrantino are harvested between the end of September and mid-October, with Sagrantino being the last to be picked. The vineyards at the winery in Turrita di Montefalco face south-west and the vines grow on shallow soils with loose, sandy loam and calcareous subsoil. After the grapes are harvested, maceration takes place on the skins in stainless steel tanks for around 28 days. Once the marc has been removed, the wine is aged for 12 months in 30 hl French oak barrels and 10 months in the bottle after light filtration. The Montefalco Rosso is marketed approximately 18 months after the harvest in accordance with the production regulations.
The Montefalco area takes its name from the falconry practised here since the Middle Ages, a great passion of Emperor Frederick II the Stauffer, who often spent time here.
