Only 119 hectares of Rotgipfler are cultivated around Gumpoldskirchen in the Thermenregion. Compared to other well-known grape varieties, this is a negligible amount, just as negligible as the Rotgipfler wines themselves. This is because the wines from Lower Austria are considered true specialties that have even accompanied the English royal family at a wedding.
Two varieties of Rotgipfler have been tried and tested for centuries; as a dry, pure white wine or as a late red Rotgipfler, a cuvée with Zierfandler. Whichever wine you choose, the high-quality and fruity white wines are particularly brilliant in summer after a little ageing. Drinking Rotgipfler young, on the other hand, is not advisable in most cases.
Rotgipfler is a cross between Savognin, a subspecies of Traminer, and Roter Veltliner. Appropriately, Grüner Veltliner is also often referred to as Weißgipfler.
The name Rotgipfler comes from the red tips of the leaves.
Gumpoldskirchen white wine made from the Rotgipfler grape variety was served at the wedding of Queen Elisabeth and Prince Philip in 1947.
Taste and character
The Rotgipfler wine is rich in extract and has a pleasant acidity. In addition to an often high alcohol content, the white wine exudes lush fruit aromas of pear, pineapple, mango and melon. The body is full-bodied and has a fine residual sweetness, making Rotgipfler suitable for storage for up to 4 years.
What dishes does Rotgipfler go well with?
Rotgipfler can be served at a temperature of 8 to 10 °C as soon as the cuisine is spicy and piquant. The fruity freshness of this Austrian white wine harmonizes particularly well with Asian cuisine.
