Talamonti is d'Abruzzo
The estate Talamonti has its roots in the Abruzzo region in a landscape characterized by authentic and unspoiled nature. The vineyards benefit from a unique terroir and the privilege of an exceptional microclimate, both of which have earned the international reputation of the municipality of Loreto Aprutino as an area particularly favoured for viticulture. A very good wine comes from a very good grape. The pulse of their entire activity is therefore determined by the vine. At Talamonti, people work in synergy with it, adapting methods and timing to the particularities of the terroir in order to preserve the identity of the grape variety.
The terroir of Talamonti
The formation of the landscape has been clearly marked by great glacial movements over millions of years. The area around Loreto Aprutino is rich in geomorphological traces typical of glacial and glacial environments. Studies of the soil composition have revealed volcanic strata.
Talamonti and its climate
The climate of Loreto Aprutino is mainly influenced by the Apennine mountain range and the Adriatic Sea, both just a few kilometres away. The average annual temperature is 15°C with extremes of 35°C in summer and -2°C in winter. Winter is moderated by the Adriatic influence, but cold air currents from the Balkans can drastically lower temperatures and cause snowfalls. These phenomena explain the harsher winters compared to other places at the same latitude.
Vineyards and olives at Talamonti
Archaeological remains tell the story of wine and olive oil production in Loreto Aprutino. This millenary tradition is now so widespread that for every 7500 inhabitants there are 1400 producers of olive oil and wine, including Talamonti. Over the centuries, dozens of literary figures, including Ovid, Pliny and Martial, have praised Abruzzo's wine in their works. Even the curing of Hannibal's horses of scurvy in 216 B.C. was attributed to Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
Wine evolution at Talamonti
The Talamonti winery extends its own grape production to a vineyard area of 45 hectares. The cultivation of the indigenous Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo varieties has been accompanied since 2004 by an experimental cultivation of the Pecorino variety. Through the meticulous effort of microvinifications, a careful knowledge of the genetic characteristics of this grape variety has been acquired with the aim of studying in detail its adaptability to a territory, its habitat and its characteristics, thus creating the possibilities for an increase in quality. The vines that thrive at Talamonti in the mountains are mainly:
- Pecorino
- Dritta
- Leccino
- Trebbiano
- Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
- Merlot
